For divorce eligibility in Australia, at the moment someone would need to go to the website and have a look through many pages of content to find the information that's relevant to them and their specific situation. Using this Rules as Code proof of concept, they're able to click on the check divorce eligibility now and go through a short form. So for example, they would select that they were born in Australia, that they are currently legally married, that their marriage is not under a nullification or divorce in terms of an application being lodged. In this case, let's say that they're separated but living together under the same roof, they've been separated for 15 months, they will not resume their relationship in the future and let's say they've also been married for less than 2 years. And in this case they were not married in Australia and they have a marriage certificate that is in a language other than English. From here, they hit Submit. That makes a call to OpenFisca, which determines that they are eligible and also gives them some customised information regarding documentation. So in this case, for their proof of marriage documentation they need to have three documents in total. Because they've been married for less than two years, they also need to provide a counselling certificate. And because they're separated but living under the same roof, they also need to provide an affidavit that states that they are separated but living under the same roof.
From here, they can view the rules or go on to some specific next steps, such as registering for the Commonwealth Courts portal where they can make their application.
Let's have a look in this case at show me the rules. These are just very simple rules statements where we try and make plain English versions of the rules, which helps with transparency and accessibility. In this case, there are a few specific rules around general eligibility for the process itself and in terms of the documentation that each person will need depending on their situation.Â
So that is our rules as code sandpit program.Â
